Please note that these represent the general characteristics we look for in companies, but the industry-specific standards are the starting place when determining eligibility for the Seal of Approval. For example, a company that specializes in packaging will be held to higher standards than outlined here in the “Packaging” section of Product/Service.

Transparency

Baseline Standards

The company should…

  • have a forthright statement of values or principles;
  • provide clear disclosure of internal policies and practices that impact employees;
  • provide disclosure of policies and practices that impact external stakeholders;
  • submit to all required financial audits.

Preferences

  • submit to third-party audits of social/environmental performance and release the conclusions thereof;
  • provide full public disclosure of manufacturing and labor information, including wages and working conditions.
  • provide profit statement outlining how profits are used.
  • engage with community stakeholder groups.

Impact

Baseline Standards

  • Involvement in supporting community activities through volunteer time, financial resources, use of office space, etc.

Preferences

  • Clear and active program of investing profits back into local communities.
  • Diversity in hiring/sourcing/marketing practices to underserved in community.
  • Focus on local hiring/sourcing.
  • A defined strategy for addressing community economic development issues.
  • Offers educational programming in local schools and business.
