Business for Democracy Alert: Your Voice Needed

Check out the latest action alert for the Business for Democracy Campaign, a movement forged to reverse the U.S. Supreme Court Citizens United ruling! Green America endorses the Business for Democracy campaign, which is supported by companies and business leaders who believe the ruling is in direct conflict with American democratic principles and a serious threat to good government.

Watch the latest video from Anne Leonard explaining the Citized United ruling.

Your business voice is needed in the new Business for Democracy Campaign that supports government by the people.

In the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision (January 21, 2010) allows corporations to spend unlimited money to support or oppose candidates for political office, overturning campaign finance laws that have been in place for decades.

This initiative is supported by business leaders and Green America.

Alicia Gravitz, Green America’s Executive Director, “We believe the ruling is in direct conflict with American democratic principles and a serious threat to good government.”

We urge you to add your name to the growing list of signers in support of the Business for Democracy Campaign.

Businesses Declare -- The Chamber Doesn't Speak for Me!

Green America is supporting the Chamber Doesn't Speak for Me Campaign -- a national effort initiated by our colleagues at 350.org to overcome the impasse on climate policy in the United States. The national Chamber of Commerce, supported by major corporate polluters, has opposed efforts at every turn to reduce our nation's carbon emissions and to develop a comprehensive U.S. clean energy agenda. Businesses, and local chambers, are now needed to sign the simple "Chamber Doesn't Speak for Me" declaration. Click here for the statement.  http://chamber.350.org/

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has a long-established, strong stance in support of the fossil fuel industry and the unfair subsidies it receives while lobbying against legislative efforts to address climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Chamber has repeatedly endorsed weak clean air standards, opposed bans on hazardous waste dumping, and worked against the Kyoto agreement on greenhouse gas emissions. In 2010 the U.S. Chamber spent over $33 million on political attack advertisements, most of which supported candidates seeking to prevent the Environmnetal Protection Agency from protecting our health and environment.

We believe the time has come for businesses to speak out on the dangerous role of the U.S. Chamber, especially as it relates to climate change and the need for a clean energy economy.  Already, more than 6,000 businesses and more than 30 local chambers of commerce have declared "The Chamber Doesn't Speak for Me!"  You can get involved by endorsing this statement and urging otehr business to do so as well.
