Goodwill, Habitat and Lowe’s Partner on Green Affordable Housing

Goodwill Industries, Habitat for Humanity, and Lowe’s Companies have set up a model partnership to educate low-income communities about energy efficiency and make energy efficiency homes available to people in Charlotte, NC.

The City of Charlotte donated a foreclosed home to Goodwill and Habitat Charlotte. They brought in Lowe’s to turn the vacant home into a model of energy efficiency for affordable housing. Named the Goodwill/Habitat ReHouse, the effort will rehab, remake, repurpose and repopulate a foreclosed home for a future Habitat for Humanity family. Students in Habitat’s Construction Services Program will receive on-the-job training opportunities as they install energy efficiency upgrades with building materials from Lowe’s.

Community members will be able to tour the “ReHouse” to learn practical, affordable ways to reduce home energy costs, after it is completed in late January 2012.
