Healthy Schools From NYC Ford Community Green Grant Winner

Congratulations to New York Coalition for Healthy School Food, winner of the 2013 New York Green Festival Ford Community Green Grant. The organization recently announced the first vegetarian public school in the U.S.

healthykids400New York Coalition for Healthy School Food (NYCHSF) introduces plant-based foods and nutrition education in schools to educate the whole school community. The organization conducts pilot programs, creates resources, holds conferences and workshops, works on legislation, and provides a healthy school food hotline.

NYCHSF was chosen from votes cast at the New York Green Festival and online from an outstanding group of finalists for the Ford Community Green Grant. The $5,000 award will contribute to their ongoing work. Semi-finalists each received a $1,000 award.

P.S. 244 in Flushing, the Active Learning Elementary School, decided to convert to vegetarian meals after noticing a higher preference for it from their majority Asian and Indian school population. NYCHSF partnered with the school to guide a seamless transition from meat to meat-free.

Ford Motor Company teams up with Green Festivals® to award Ford Community Green Grants in each Green Festival city. No idea is too big or too small, but to be considered, the organization must be local, innovative and a certified non-profit. Before each event, a panel from Green Festivals and Ford Motor Company selects a group of five finalists to present their proposals in the Ford Pavilion at each festival.

Voting is now open for the Chicago Green Grant! Vote now for your favorite organization.
