Tell Congress: NO to Dirty Fuels

Obama stood up against the Keystone XL Pipeline, but its proponents are still pushing to fast-track the dangerous, dirty fuels project at the expense of investing in our clean energy future. Business voices are needed to oppose any Congressional measures that attempt to undercut the President’s decision.

This Canadian tar sands extraction and transport process has dire implications for human health, the environment, the well being of Native communities, climate change, and the economy. The TransCanada corporation that would build the pipeline and its supporters have tried to convince the public that the project will be a big jobs creator and that it will provide a stable source of energy to the United States.

In fact, only a low number of temporary jobs would be created and a significant amount of the oil would be refined in the US for export. Proponents of the pipeline ignore the much greater opportunity of building enduring jobs in our domestic renewable energy sector. Investment in clean energy generates 3-4 times as many jobs as investments in fossil fuels.

A number of labor unions have opposed the pipeline, including the United Steelworkers Union, United Auto Wokers, Communications Workers of America, Service Employees International Union, Amalgamated Transit Union, and the Transport Workers Union of America.

Congressional Republicans and Big Oil are pushing legislation to find another way to push the pipeline through.

Call the Congressional Switchboard and urge your Representatives and Senators to oppose any legislation that would reverse the President’s decision to reject the Keystone XL pipeline at this time!
