VICTORY: Richard Cordray Appointed to Direct Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

VICTORY! On January 5, 2012 consumers and small businesses achieved an important victory with President Obama’s appointment of Richard Cordray to direct the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The CFPB was created despite immense opposition from Wall Street and from many Republicans who then also blocked the process for nominating the bureau’s first director. By making a recess appointment, the President has solidly affirmed his commitment to protecting American households and small businesses from predatory and deceptive financial products and services.

Sign the Business Leaders' Letter to Oppose the Keystone XL Pipeline and Support Renewable Energy

VICTORY! On November 10, 2011 the Obama Administration announced it would require another environmental impact review before determining the ultimate fate of the Keystone XL pipeline. The time needed to conduct this review means the decision whether or not to build the pipeline will likely be postponed until 2013. This decision has been widely interpreted to mean that the pipeline project will likely not move forward.
Green America welcomes this announcement from the President and urges businesses committed to a clean energy future to maintain their opposition to the pipeline until it is ultimately cancelled. The new environmental review will focus on alternate routes for the pipeline, but the dangers of the project cannot be fixed through re-routing. Green America urges business leaders who have not yet signed the letter below to do so.

VICTORY: Landmark Financial Reforms Won for Consumers & Small Businesses

Congress completed its vote on final passage of the historic financial reform package that has been debated for more than a year. On July 15, 2010, the Senate voted 60 – 39 to reign in a number of the abusive financial practices conducted by both small lenders in strip malls and mega-banks on Wall Street.

Green America, in partnership with the American Sustainable Business Council and Americans for Financial Reform, worked on a specific key component of the bill – the Consumer Financial Protection Agency (now renamed a “Bureau.”). The Bureau will protect consumers and small businesses from predatory financial products and services, including mortgages, credit cards, debit cards, pay day loans, and more. The creation of the Bureau is the farthest reaching consumer financial protection enacted in decades.
